As part of the approval for the building of 126 homes at Arras Lines and Sour Beck, there are plans for the building of a Memorial Garden. Colburn Town Council was asked by the building company Shepherd Homes for input as to what they felt would be suitable and fitting for this minor project. After consultation with the general public is was agreed that a large memorial stone with some seating would be appropriate.
Following on from this, the Town Council identified some superb seats and benches that are manufactured by David Ogilvie Engineering Ltd, who are based in Kilmarnock, Scotland. The seats depict typical settings of World War 1 and would be fitting additions to a Memorial Garden based in Arras Lines. The Battle of Arras was a British offensive during the First World War. In the spring of 1917, British and Commonwealth soldiers attacked German defences near the French city of Arras on the Western Front suffering over 158,000 casualties.
The Town Council has been in contact with the manufacturer and has received a quote for two seats and hopes to speak with Shepherd Homes over the coming weeks about their inclusion into the Arras Line Memorial Garden.
